Kitu Gidwani (born was on 22 October 1967) is an Indian actress and model. She has starred in some movies as well as serials in Indian television. She became popular after a TV series, Air Hostess aired on Doordarshan in 1986.

Personal life and education

Gidwani was born in Mumbai. Her Sindhi parents migrated from Pakistan after the partition. They lived in a refugee camp in Worli. She has a brother. She studied in Fort Convent School, Mumbai. Her graduation days saw her interested in French and she started acting in French plays. Soon she was acting in English plays directed by Janak Toprani. She acted in some television serials and subsequently acted in a French film "Black".

She was married and has divorced since, and has vowed not to marry again.

Career

Gidwani made her television debut in 1984, with TV soap, Trishna, and during the 1980s and 90s, gave some memorable performances in TV serials like, Swabhimaan, 'Air Hostess' and Junoon. She caught a lot of attention after her kissing scene in bed with actor Raj Zutshi in Junoon. She recently appears in multi-starrer Hindi serials, Kaashish and Kulvadhu.

In 2001, she was roped in by Wills Lifestyle, an apparel chain owned by ITC Limited, to promote Wills Sport Lifestyle brand of clothing. In 2006, he also acted in a play, 'Your Place or Mine’ by Darshan Jariwala.

She also did a play, Sock’em With Honey, where he played a traditional Parsi woman from Pakistan, whose daughter falls in love with a Jew, prompting her first trip abroad.

Awards

In 1998, Kitu was awarded Best Actress by the Festival of Three Continents in Nantes, France. The award recognized her outstanding achievement for the role of Pallavi in Dance of the Wind (dir. Rajan Khosa).

Career

Kavya entered the industry as a child artist in the film Pookkalam Varavayi (1991) in the role of a school girl. She came to public attention when she played the childhood part of the heroine character in Kamal's Azhakiya Ravanan (1996). She has since acted in over 25 films in Malayalam and a few in Tamil. She is noted for having retained her rural Nileshwaram accent. She was not allowed to dub for her movies because her voice does not fit the usual "sweet and soft" voice of typical dubbers. Divya Venkatasubramaniam (born was on July 3, 1982) is a Tamil actress. Her screen names include Kanika in Tamil & Malayalam (also misspelt as Kaniha, Kaniga or Kanihaa) and Shravanthi in Telugu & Kannada. She completed her engineering degree at BITS Pilani during which she acted her first two movies. She became a full time actress thereafter. She has acted in Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada movies, making her a truly southern spice actress. She has also forayed into playback singing, dubbing and anchoring TV shows in her short career. Early life

Kanika was born on July 3, 1982 as the second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Venkat Subramanian, both engineers. She grew up in a typical Tamil Brahmin household in the suburbs of Madurai. She studied at TVS Lakshmi Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Madurai and was reputedly a good student, who won many awards in school. She was also a vocalist. She pursued Bachelors in Engineering from BITS, Pilani. She had also done pop music and light shows even during her school and college days.

Career

Even as she was doing Engineering, Kanika was also making waves as a beauty pageant and pop singer. She was crowned Miss Madurai in 1999 and she later emerged as 2nd runner-up in Miss Chennai in 2001. On her crowning of Miss Chennai, she was the cynosure of all eyes during the competition and attracted director Susi Ganesan so much that he was so insistent on her performing the lead role in his dream movie Five Star. She eventually accepted the offer and gave a good account of herself.

A Break

Kanika knew her priorities very well and shunned all the offers to complete her graduation. The fact she rejected offers from people like Shankar, P.C. Sreeram, Cheran etc to pursue her studies raised the eyebrows of many Kollywood onlookers. Even before she finished her graduation, she completed her Telugu debut "Ottessi Chepputunna" during her vacations.

Versatile Actress

After meritoriously completing her engineering, Kanika decided to give herself a go at the Tinsel towns. She gave a good account of herself in the Kannada picture Annavaru, a remake of Tamil movie nd neat role in the film Autograph and earned critical acclaim. To prove her versatility with all genres of cinema, Kanika gave a stunning performance in a comedy oriented role in the commercial movie Aethiree. When no heroine was willing to pair with the one legged wonder hero Kutty for the film "Dancer", Kanika gladly accepted the offer and did a neat job. She accepted to redo her own part in the movie "Autograph" for its telugu version "Naa Autograph". She proved to be an actress to reckon with in the Kannada movie "Sye", a remake of Tamil movie "Dhill". She also ventured into Malayalam Cinema as the heroine for the campus based movie Ennitum. She won a lot of applause and acclaim for her latest role opposite Ajith in the movieVaralaru.

She had anchored a comedy show "Kalakka Povathu Yaaru" for STAR VIJAY. She had hosted with elan the popular family based game-show "Mega Thanga Vettai" for SUN TV. Jayanthi was born in 1950 is an Indian actress. She has appeared in over 500 films, including films in the Kannada,Telugu,Tamil, Malayalam, Hindi and Marathi languages.

Early life

Jayanthi was born in Bellary. Her maiden name before she came to films was Kamala Kumari. Her father Balasubramanyam worked as English professor at the St Joseph's College in Bangalore. Her mother was Santhanalakshmi. Jayanthi was the eldest of three siblings and had two younger brothers. Jayanthi's childhood was never smooth. Her parents separated early in life and her mother took the children and moved to Madras. Jayanthi's mother was keen on making her daughter a classical dancer and hence she joined a dance school run by Chandrakala. Her friend in dance school was the famous Tamil actress Manorama.

As a child on one occasion when Jayanthi went to the studios to see her idol N T Rama Rao, he called her and sat her on his lap. Affectionately he had asked her whether she would agree to become his heroine and the little girl had merely blushed. One day the pair would give big hits like Jegadekaveeruni Katha, Kula Gowravam, Kondaveeti Simham and Justice Chowdhury.

Jayanthi was ridiculed most of the times as she was plump and could never dance well. During her teens she had the chance to act in a few Tamil and Telugu movies as a side artiste. On one such occasion (as Jayanthi remembered in one of her interviews) the great Telugu actress Savitri was upset with newcomer Jayanthi who could not convincingly narrate a few Tamil dialogues. She stormed out of the sets saying that the director had brought in people who hardly knew acting or the language. Jayanthi was shattered after the episode but promised herself that one day she would prove her worth. She enjoyed a good run in the Kannada Film industry and formed very good pair with the famous actor and doyen of Kannda Cinema Mr. Rajkumar, with whom she acted in more than 30 movies.

Jayanthi's life changed completely when noted Kannada director Y R Swamy spotted her during one of her dance rehearsals. He brought her to Kannada films such as Jenu Goodu. He also changed her name to Jayanthi.

Rise to fame

Jeenu Goodu was Jayanthi's first kannada film. She acted alongside veterans like Ashwath and Pandari Bai. Incidentally this was actress Chandrakala's first film as well. Jenu Goodu was a commercial success. Her next major film was T V Singh Thakur's Chandavalliya Thota. The film starred veteran actors Uday Kumar, Raj Kumar and Jayashree. This was the first film that paired Raj and Jayanthi. Based on Ta Ra Su's novel by the same name, Chandavalliya Thota was a huge success and even won the President's Medal for best film. Jayanthi in one of her interviews fondly remembered an incident during the shooting of this film. During a particular scene Jayanthi's character dies and Uday Kumar has to fall on her to cry. Uday Kumar was so engrossed in his acting that he had forgotten that he had put his whole body weight on the young girl Jayanthi, who was yelling in pain and asking him to get up.

The next major film that Jayanthi starred in was Miss Leelavathi. This film was released in the mid-60's and directed by M R Vittal. Miss Leelavathi was a very bold film for its time and Jayanthi played the title role. The story is about the influence of bad parenting on young Leelavathi's mind. She is the darling of her father (Ashwath) who supports her in all her endeavours. Leelavathi grows up to be rebel in the house and stands up against the conventional values of life. She refuses marriage, wishes to be a career-oriented women and has a care-free attitude towards premarital sex. Unfortunately she pays for the consequences.

Miss Leelavathi had a very bold theme considering the fact that it was made at a time when the film industry was very conservative. Jayanthi was launched as the glamour-diva through the film and she was at her best. This was probably the first Kannada film to show-case a heroine's glamour. The film was a huge success and catapulted Jayanthi to fame. Jayanthi for the first time in Kannada film history wore skirts, T-shirts and even a nightie on screen. She is credited for introducing most of the modern day outfits onto the Kannada screen for the first time. She also wore a swimsuit for the film, which the producers' first choice for the role had refused to do. Miss Leelavathi had some of the lovely songs like "Nodu ba nodu ba nammoora" and Kuvempu's classic "Doni Saagali". Miss Leelavathi got Jayanthi the national award for best actress. Jayanthi fondly remembered the occasion in one of her interviews when she received the award from Smt Indira Gandhi (then IB Minister). Mrs Gandhi after giving away the award called back Jayanthi and gave her a sweet kiss and wished her good luck.

She was studying Electronics engineering in Vizag when she got her first film offer. She was introduced to Tamil films through Guru Shishyan, a superhit film co-starring Rajnikanth.

She was a top heroine of tamil cinema from the late 80's to the mid 90's ,and a competitor to the other heroines of the time, Kushboo and Banupriya.

Her role in the movie Thevar Magan was well received by the audience.

She also achieved a critical acclaim for her role in Mani Ratnam's "Iruvar"(1997), which had Aishwarya Rai,Prakash Rai,Mohan Lal,Tabu, Nasser and Revathi in the lead.

She has acted also in Kannada films Elu Suttina Kote, Chikkejamana and Cheluva. She has acted in the Hindi movies, Pyar Hua chori chori, Janata ki Adalat, Haiwan, Admi, Appoo Raja, Trimurti and Dhaal. Prior to this, she had done a few movies in Malayalam, notably His Highness Abdulla which was a Mohanlal starrer, and Dhruvam, which was a Mammootty starrer. She has acted in the Tamil serial "Indira" in the lead role of Indira. She also danced in the famous song 'Chikku Bukku Railu' with Prabhu Deva in the film Gentleman.Recently she has done a talk show in Sun TV titled ANBUDAN which was launched to compete with Koffee with Anu running successfully on STAR Vijay.

Personal life

She married Sandeep Bhatia on June 7, 1998 at Taj Coromandel hotel in Chennai whom she divorced in a year. She now lives with Kamal Haasan along with her only daughter. She considers Kamal's daughter as hers and has publicly declared that she has 3 daughters. The same is with Kamal's daughters too. She is suffering from cancer.

Early life

Gauri Pradhan's father was a Major in the Indian Army so she lived in a lot of places in India throughout her childhood. After her father's retirement, her family settled down in Pune where she studied Psychology in SP College. In 1998 she came to Mumbai to take part in Miss India and reached among the finalist.

Career

Gauri started off her career doing some modelling and commercials. Her first major appearance was in and as Noorjehan, the Mughal Empress aired on DD and then came 'Kutumb' but she is best known for playing Nandini in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. She has also made an episodic appearance in the series 'Kya Hadsaa Kya Haqeeqat, Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahin and Rihaee on Sony and played the role of the protagonist in Sony televisions 'Naam Gum Jayega'. In April 2008 she entered the popular show Left Right Left.

She was nominated for the MTV Lycra Style Awards in the category for Most Stylish Person on TV (Female) in 2004. In 2005, Gauri won the Best Evergreen Pair of the decade on Sony television with husband Hiten for Kutumb. In 2005 & 2007 & recently in 2008 she won the star parivar favourite jodi award with husband Hiten (for the characters Karan and Nandini in KSBKBT).They are the only jodi to have won it thrice till date.

In 2006 she was awarded for best supporting actress in the Indian Television Awards for her portrayal of the character Nandini. She has made notable appearances with her hubby Hiten in several films produced in collaboration with "Balaji Telefilms" which is the same company which also runs many well known television serials in which she acts.
